From Ronda to the exciting Caminito del Rey

Did you know that the Caminito del Rey was once considered one of the most dangerous routes in the world? But fear not! Today it has been fully restored and thousands of visitors a year enjoy its incredible and dizzying landscapes. Do you want to be the next person to live the adventure? We’ll tell you about it!

Caminito del Rey: a gorge in the heart of the province of Malaga

Located in the province of Malaga, Spain, in the Gaitanes Gorge, it is only a 1 hour drive from Ronda. It is one of the most spectacular and well-known trails in the world, as it is a walk literally hanging on the vertical walls of the gorge. But as we said, nowadays it is totally safe and accessible for all those who wish to enjoy it, we tell you its incredible story!

Caminito del Rey: history and rehabilitation

The Caminito del Rey was built between 1901 and 1905 to facilitate the passage of the workers of the Sociedad Hidroeléctrica del Chorro between the hydroelectric power stations of Gaitanejo and El Chorro. Do you know why it is so called? It received its name when King Alfonso XIII crossed its paths during the inauguration of the Conde del Guadalhorce dam in 1921.

Time and lack of maintenance caused the trail to deteriorate noticeably, and it began to be visited by intrepid climbers, attracted by its reputation as one of the most dangerous trails in the world.

It was in 2011 that the local authorities undertook an ambitious rehabilitation project to restore the Caminito del Rey, which reopened in 2015, now completely safe for visitors.

The route and its charms

The route of the Caminito del Rey stretches for almost 8 kilometres, including walkways, paths and bridges that cross the impressive Gaitanes Gorge. The highlight of the route is the suspension footbridge over 100 metres above the Guadalhorce River. This structure offers breathtaking panoramic views and a vertigo-inducing experience for those who dare to cross it.

Along the way, visitors can enjoy a diversity of natural landscapes, from Mediterranean forests to rugged rock formations and narrow canyons. The flora and fauna of the region are also an attraction, with the possibility of spotting birds of prey, mountain goats and a variety of native plants that enrich the environment.

Tips for visitors

For those planning to visit the Caminito del Rey, it is important to bear in mind some practical tips. Booking tickets in advance is essential, as the number of daily visitors is limited in order to preserve the natural environment and ensure safety. In addition, it is recommended to wear comfortable clothing and footwear, suitable for a walk lasting several hours.

Access to the Caminito del Rey is restricted to persons over 8 years of age and it is advisable for visitors to be in good physical condition to fully enjoy the route. Although the route is safe, it is essential to follow the staff’s instructions and respect the established rules.
